I'm aware that I'm a sucker for some right mediocre stuff if it happens to sound a particular way. But I think that way is that the people are playing together, listening to each other, giving the impression that they like making music rather than that they want to be pop stars or to sound like something that sounds cool. I find in those circumstances people tend to pick up the superficial sounds thinking that's what makes the music good, and miss the inward concentration, the togetherness, so it can only weigh on the moment instead of lift it up.
Not to obviously flatter a band you like or anything but the reason I like the Lovegods, enjoyed them so much live, is that their superficial sound is not the first thing you notice at all - you notice that it's good music and then if you wanted to be picky about it you could try and find a category for it, but it doesn't matter, the essential thing is that they are very much a band, that they're not merely playing instruments but making music, that they do something special to the moment. It's only one song I've heard, I admit, but I don't think My Morning Jacket do that.
Well, that's it though
