FRIDAY

I woke up feeling annoyed and wasn't sure why, then remembered it's because I made noticeable mistakes during last night's show. Sigh. Guarantee that no one else remembers or cares so why do I torture myself!!

Today Jameson has auditions for his Disney Events Group Project Which I Can't Share Yet. As I type this they're just starting to hear the first auditionees. What must it be like to sit on the audition panel for a project that YOU started, listening to people perform who want to be a part of it?? I would imagine it's a bit nerve-wracking but also exhilarating! I am hoping he'll tell me all about it later!

Friday is typically my decompression/slug around day, and it was pretty much that today. Breakfast, then Ubering to a laundromat since once again the hotel doesn't have washers. But I was smart and brought my iPad, and spent the time air-tromboning. Re-memorizing progress is going smoothly and there's still plenty of time.
9b54101b-9a6e-473d-bf5a-dd3a7c5fd132.jpg

After laundry I took another Uber back to Target because they actually had the Lemon Cake and Chocolate Strawberry Drizzilicious in stock this time! I got both flavors for myself, and just Lemon Cake for Jael (PT) and Maya (Assist. Wardrobe.) For all upcoming cities Target would be an Uber or an Instacart order no matter what, that's why I decided to just go get them now.

Back to the hotel to put laundry away, gather up stuff to go back in my trunk, eat lunch, and send Tucson Foodie Finds out to the group. Jameson checked in to tell me about some of the auditions, sounded pretty typical and they do have some candidates already which is great. Continued my day with a brief nap, watching some anime, reading my book, meal planning, and designing and ordering a shirt for Jameson (I'd wanted to do this for his birthday last November but didn't get the graphic I needed in time.) As planned, a slow lazy day, but I admit to being kinda bored. Wish it weren't scorching hot out.

Evening show was nothing to report except I played much better than the previous night, avoiding making the same mistakes (though I made a few different ones, lol. We're human down there.)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

SATURDAY

Normal morning of breakfast and working on San Francisco Foodie Finds. I won't be there in San Fran due to union Rule 24 but that doesn't mean everyone else won't still want to know what's good around the hotel and theater.

The matinee show was probably the most responsive crowd we've had yet here in El Paso, which is to say we finally enjoyed "typical" levels of applause and cheering. Some people even stayed afterward to listen to the exit music and then specifically applaud the band which was very lovely. I don't know what it is with crowds here, though...I mean they SEEM engaged and as though they like the show, I'm seeing lots of merch being bought and all that, but they are so subdued in their reactions to the performance.

Audience reactions and how they change, from show to show and city to city, fascinate me. Like, pretty much everyone cheers and applauds a lot after Be Our Guest, but sometimes there is a surprise BURST of applause during the tap number. Sometimes in the scene where Belle's ball gown is revealed there is an audible "ooOOooo" from the audience, sometimes applause, and sometimes it's dead silent. I wanna see a case study lol.

Anyway. Between shows I hustled back to the hotel, a la 8-bit Mario avoiding the Angry Sun.
FiEwIl.gif

Watching That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime, portions of season 3 because season 4 is out now and I need a refresher. Chatted with Jameson while he was holding more auditions, it sounds like he got some really good candidates out of this batch. And spent some time updating an About Me post which I do once a year or so for any new LJ or DW friends. Dinner (brown rice, tofu, avocado) and back to the theater for the evening show. The Knicks won sometime during our intermission and half of backstage was going nuts about it. Congrats to them, I know it's been a long dry spell! I don't care at all about sports but was happy to see my friends happy about it.

SUNDAY

Still waking up at like 6:30am, my body refuses to believe it's not 8:30.
Coffee and breakfast, partial packing. My suitcase gets packed in layers...

The zipper pouch along the back of the suitcase wall holds little things like batteries, earplugs, medicines, pay stubs, and KN95 masks. The two fold-over pouches on the sides hold my toothbrush, pads, a tin with tweezers and nail clippers, dish sponges, thermometer, charging cables, and pretty much any small things that I throw in last minute.
The bottom layer is two clothing cubes (yes there are visible bras, get over it), two small packing cubes with my tupperware and laundry supplies, my neoprene lunchbox with a container of oats inside, a mini umbrella, and a small bag that holds my plastic trash bags. Oh and under all of that is an extension cord.
f14a7310-5ec5-4ecf-a65a-d536bf62f6d3.jpg

Middle layer is my food tupperware that holds tuna pouches, peanut butter, tea and coffee, candy, jerky, condiments, etc etc.; a medium-sized packing cube with my mess kit, Aeropress, dishware, and ziploc bags; the Itaki cooker; paper towels and a roll of plastic wrap; my collapsible silicone kettle; and the 36oz empty and dry water bottle that I use in the pit. Since we are busing to the next city this will actually travel with me in a tote bag on the bus, full of water, but I've dropped it in for illustrative purposes.
2010a1c0-d336-472e-bdfb-c2ef0a2c1c62.jpg

And the top layer: BATB hoodie (under the laundry bag), dirty laundry bag, tote bag (if we aren't traveling by bus), grey bean-shaped pillow, and toiletry ziploc bag. I know the pillow looks big but it weighs nearly nothing and smooshes down small easily.
ffa25250-a236-4eda-bf1e-dc442ea66159.jpg

My flip-flops are wrapped in a plastic bag and go in an outer pocket. I used to keep a spare set of shoes wrapped in a bag in the bottom left where the toiletries are, next to the food tupperware. But I was so disgusted by the thought of having dirty shoes near my food and dishes that I've since moved those to my trunk.

All of this usually comes out to 45-48 pounds (20.4 - 21.7 kg) and if I add a winter coat, the extra shoes, or too much leftover food, it can hit 50lbs. Somehow, everything I need for months on the road really does fit in this 29" (73 cm) suitcase. We are allowed to carry TWO 50lb bags, but A) I have never needed that much stuff even when I DIDN'T have a trunk on tour, B) dragging 100lbs (45.3 kg) of luggage all across the country does not appeal to me, and C) I like to reserve the additional company-paid bag for when the tenor or bass trombone need to come with me on a flight.

(since there were so few pics this week I am boring you with these logistics.)

Anyway, pooped around all morning with picking at Foodie Finds and watching anime, eventually eating a light lunch and walking to the theater. Our horn sub, Nancy, is here for Sarah who is out for another gig during all of Tucson and maybe all of Tempe too. Nancy's a great player and even though she'd jumped time zones and been on a flight all day, managed to sound amazing. I'm glad she's filling in, we have nothing to worry about!

Today there was a cute little dialogue change in the show...
At the scene where Belle refuses to have dinner with the Beast, he asks Lumiere, "Why is she being so difficult?"
To which Lumiere replied, "Maybe she bet on the Spurs!"

The line got an appreciative laugh and applause from the audience, but I sure hope he asked permission to change that line before doing it and/or the write-up is worth it! Lol!

Between shows I got back to the hotel and in order to get some extra exercise, did a little trick. My room is on the 10th floor. I rode the elevator to the 5th floor, got out there, and took the stairs the rest of the way. Little extra steps add up. Dinner and back to the theater. Nothing to report for the evening show except that we had to cut the Transformation due to some technical issue (it's a very complex scene.) We played our "Plan B" music and that was just fine, though I always feel bad for the audience that doesn't get to see that cool part of the show. Packed up my stuff, got back to the hotel, and tomorrow is a 5-hour bus ride to Tucson. Sorry that I didn't do much here in El Paso but between weekday matinees, the brutal heat, and the fact that most activities here are outdoors, it just didn't work out. Glad I got to see this place, and hope to see more of it "next time" if there is one.

Monday:
5-hour bus ride to Tucson, the usual checking in settling in and getting groceries.

Tuesday: Opening day in Tucson.

Hugo homework continues. I and my reading buddies are posting about it real time on the sync read post, but also posting here as I finish things I consider stand-alone books (novellas and longer) and complete categories:

11. Emily Tesh, The Incandescent – Hugo homework furnished me with a copy and a deadline, but I’ve been curious to read it for a while, because a number of my flisters had, and I’d even seen some of their Yuletide requests. I was also approaching it with a bit of trepidation, because so far everything I’ve read by Emily Tesh started out being great and then disappointed me in the ending to some degree. I think maybe my expectations are getting calibrated appropriately, because I was less disappointed by this ending than by aspects of Some Desperate Glory, let alone the entire second novella of the Greenhollow duology, but I was also less excited about the beginning. More, with spoilers )

I liked the individual components of the book – the magic school from a teacher’s perspective was great! I liked the students, I thought the central character and her arc were interesting even if I didn’t like her much. I do think it’s put together in a very weird way that doesn’t do it any favors as a novel, and Emily Tesh’s inability to write endings that I find satisfying strikes again – so I think I’m left more frustrated than won over by the whole…But I’m glad this book exists, and that I read it, for the teaching-of-magic aspects, and general teaching-as-vocation feels (which were well-timed for the weekend of attending my younger child’s probably-last graduation). I would not be mad if it wins a Hugo.

I found a chance to catch up on Taskmaster Australia s5e06. I was actually going to wait until I came back from Europe and binge the rest of the season, but a Reddit post hinted at ep 6 having something extraordinary, so I decided to carve out the time. Spoilers! )

There's two types of Batey - one glass, one stoneware.

There's a piece that says ugh row - maybe from a pub called The Plough and Harrow? There was one on Newington Butts.

The TT & C could be from a Barrett & Co bottle?

I mostly picked up the pieces of glass as they were looking pretty.

The largest piece of an Express Dairies Aster pattern cup I've found so far.

A Booths sherd.

A small bottle.

A pipe.

A sherd that has gone very black but says British fireproof under there, as if the sherd has most definitely been in a fire, but it has survived.

The fish sculpture was still on the foreshore.

I also noticed lots of shoes and bits of shoes, some were embedded in the rocks. I didn't pick any of the shoes up.

Shoe

Mudlarking finds - 07.06.26

A wooden and metal thing.

Boat

A boat made from a pottery sherd and an eraser found on the Thames foreshore.

I like to imagine the boat sailing on a sea of words it is slowly erasing.

WEDNESDAY

Forced myself to stay in bed until my alarm went off at 7am. Overall my fancy watch tells me that I get around 6 hours of sleep, so I need to be working on improving that in addition to time zone change disruptions.

Breakfast, San Diego Foodie Finds, procrastinating on my MSP and Epic Universe music practicing. I could have totally worked on it even without the trombone by listening to the recordings and air-tromboning along with the sheet music to glance at, but...my soul was tantrumming about having to do it, and I let it have it's way this one time.

Around noon I got an Uber to the audiologist. Even though the office was only a 15-minute walk away, it was already 98°F (36.6°C) with a UV index of 11 (very bad!). I was early to fill out paperwork, but they were not ready for me until 20 minutes after my appointment time. The audiologist was no-nonsense and very thorough. He did an audiogram (pitches and volume), a word recognition test, speech audiometry test (accurate repetition of heard words), acoustic reflex/decay test (checks reaction time of inner ear muscles), and a tympanometry test (middle ear functions and fluid levels.) I've had ear tests before but never one so thorough, so even though this was $140 out of pocket, as a musician I absolutely think it was worth doing. And I very likely should have had one of these sooner considering that hearing is critical to my freaking job.

All of that said, the audiologist not only did not find anything wrong, but also exclaimed that I have "exceptional" hearing not only for my age but also my profession. "Normal" hearing thresholds are between -10db and 25db; mild hearing loss is considered to be between 26db and 40db. I had no values above 15db in either ear. He was very surprised about that. His son plays French horn and is my age, and so he actually asked ME if I had any tips to share for how I'd protected my hearing!! This is all great news, but now I've got to wonder why my right ear feels stuffy. My guess is it's that obnoxious TMJ again. The audiologist suggested it might have to do with the changes in air pressure that happen in my mouth, head, and sinuses while I'm playing. Is it that? or TMJ? Maybe even a tonsil stone? All of it means that there really is nothing to do but endure it until it resolves itself. Rats, but that's the answer I expected tbh. Grateful it's nothing serious.

I DID walk back to the hotel in the heat because it just felt so stupid to Uber such a short walk. Rested for a bit, hydrated, got dressed for work, slapped on some 70spf sunscreen, and walked to the theater (just 5 minutes.) It's the Plaza El Paso, a cute little 1930s building, small with only about 2,000 seats. I set up my trombones and mutes and stuff, then climbed to the conductor podium to have a look. There are fake plants in here! And total Spanish mission vibes with the faux housefronts sporting white plaster, red tile, and ornate lanterns.

The sky also has stars with accurate constellations. It wasn't "on" when I took that video, but later in the pit I could glimpse some of the stars from my spot near the wall. We are deeply under the stage here so there will unfortunately not be much audience interaction here.

Sound check was fine. Afterward I ate a packed dinner but ended up walking back to the hotel anyway to drag all of my trunk stuff, because we planned to go out after the show and celebrate Maria's (clarinet) first full show with us! I didn't want to have all of my crap with me for that. The show went "ok," DAR (our MD) seemed happy with it but personally I thought intonation was rough. When you add new players + a new space, tuning and intonation can be an adjustment, and hopefully it'll resolve itself quickly.

The post-show hang was at Ambar, a rather fancy joint specializing in rare tequilas, agave, and mezcal. I'm not a fan of any of that and also didn't want to drink, so just got a ginger beer. For once everyone in the band showed up, and we got a pic. The *NEW* BATB Orchestra, ladies and gentlemen :p

(Maria, clarinet, is on the right in the very center of the row of us.)

THURSDAY

I slept terribly, which is frustrating because that was kind of the whole reason I didn't drink alcohol last night was so I'd sleep better and be hydrated. But my stomach was angry, probably about the acid in the ginger beer? Whatever, woke up at 7am, coffee and breakfast. We'd gotten some travel reimbursement checks (finally! months later!) so I got to deposit those and mark some of my receipts as "paid." Jameson got a little windfall from some side gigs and OT as well, so we talked about redoing the master bathroom shower while I'm home. The grout is dry and falling out and the plexi is so old and scratched that it looks cloudy no matter how I scrub. It'll be expensive to replace it all but the time to do these things is when we've got money saved.

Anyway, worked on Foodie Finds and even air-tromboned my MSP music for a bit, then off to the theater. Today's show went much better intonation-wise, I think Maria is making adjustments which is great. Between shows I rushed back to the hotel in the intense heat and sun (I was only outside for five minutes but could feel my shoulders burning!), had a snack, watched anime, tried to figure out what I want to do in Tucson, eventually ate dinner and went back to the theater for the evening show. Audiences here have been rather subdued, but this one was the best yet with generous applause and a few people who stuck around afterward to tell the musicians we'd done a good job (always appreciated!). Unfortunately I personally played poorly, probably due to A) having slept badly and B) getting in my own head and being self-critical. It happens. We have five shows left and I'll try to do better!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday:
Laundry early in the morning, practicing and Foodie Finds work, and possibly the El Paso History Museum? One evening show.

Saturday and Sunday: Two shows each day, nothing planned.

This post covers Monday and Tuesday.

MONDAY

I've never been to El Paso whatsoever so there's no previous-experience bias for once. It's supposed to be 100+ degrees all week so the plan is to lay low and work on theme park music and such...but something exciting and unexpected always happens to make my posts longer (that's NOT a complaint!)

I wanted to do this post DITL format, but think that would make this too long for most people (the regular posts are already too long.) Instead I will share the specific things that I did this morning, that I do any time I'm checking out of a hotel. Sharing in the hopes that others would consider doing them too:
  • Gather all of the towels into one pile (saves housekeeping having to gather them)
  • Gather all of the trash into one bag (saves housekeeping having to gather it)
  • Put the hairdryer back in it's bag
  • Sweep up my hair after blow drying a final time
  • Remove any accumulated hair from the shower catch
  • Put any furniture, appliances, remote, etc back to original room spots
  • Rinse off the soap tray after using hand soap for the last time (this is surprisingly time-consuming)
  • Wipe flat surfaces with a Clorox wipe
  • Leave several pieces of candy for housekeeping
  • Throw final bag of trash away at a hallway trash can if there is one
Did you know that hotel housekeepers are expected to clean between 15-20 rooms per shift?
And that the average time they're expected to spend on a room is between 30-45 minutes?

I am traveling with a large group, which means when we check out housekeeping may be faced with 30-40 rooms to clean, PLUS those of other guests, PLUS freshening up rooms for people still staying there, PLUS their other cleaning duties. Doing small time savers when I leave, such as putting trash and towels in one place where they can be scooped up rather than making someone scurry around the whole room gathering towels--or spend time wrapping up a hairdryer cord, or scraping soap residue off of a soap dish--if you add it all up, these little things could save people MINUTES cleaning up after you. And in their line of work, those minutes MATTER.

This morning in addition to breakfast and packing up, I gradually did all of those things. Worked on San Diego Foodie Finds a bit, got an Uber to the airport. The first flight was delayed only 5 minutes. It was a bit turbulent landing in Houston. We were delayed another 5 waiting for a jet bridge. That tiny 10-minute delay meant having to rush to catch the connection, no time to pee or grab something to eat. I have REALLY got to check the connection times on these company-booked flights, and take the buyout on anything with an unrealistically short layover. The dice do not need to be rolled just to save a couple bucks, imo.

Second flight was also a bit turbulent. A few years ago I would have been frightened, sweating and hyperventilating from anxiety. I still get anxious but not nearly as bad any more, which is huge progress for me and a huge relief. Exposure therapy really did work!

Ubered to the hotel, checked that the fridge worked, and right back into an Uber for Whole Paycheck. Dinner, unpacking, and forcing myself to stay awake until 10pm which feels like midnight.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TUESDAY

I had a crummy sleep because the AC in this room makes a howling sound if you set the fan to Auto. Lesson learned, around 3am I dragged myself up to put it back to "On" instead. Was predictably awake way too early because "7am" is now 5am. The fridge in this hotel is overzealous so my overnight oats were partially frozen, but considering how hot it is outside that's fine lol. I'll probably have some frozen tofu and salmon to contend with too, but luckily didn't get any refrigerated veggies this time, otherwise they would have been ruined.

Was going to work on Foodie Finds this morning but my Aunt called! She's been on vacation and got back about a week ago. I had my morning coffee while listening to her describe her vacay and other doings...including an interview to be a volunteer at a local museum! It was a much more intense and rigorous process than she'd been expecting...what she described sounded a lot like one of my orchestral auditions, yeeeek. Still, she has loads of experience as a teacher which means speaking in front of large groups of children, lots of activity and lesson planning, great organizational skills, and overall experience that *I* think a museum should be happy to have from a volunteer. She won't know if she is in the next round or not until July.

After that I decided to force myself to walk to Walgreens before the daytime temp hit 90°F (32.2°C.) It's supposed to get up to 100 today and I'm not really interested in being out in that any more than necessary. Still, this is a beautiful part of the city and there were nice things to see.

"Aztec Plaza" gazebo (I sat in the center and looked directly up to take this pic):

Another nearby plaza:
c8ca5315-73b4-48a3-8bc5-2ef06f04dcb2.jpg

Turned a corner and was surprised to see this big ad for our show on the Convention Center.
It's so large that I could see it several blocks away.

7d3d297c-cb72-4b3a-96ba-70b246ad5379.jpg

But the theater we're actually playing is a smallish 1930s building. I found that another few blocks away.
575e2170-0c25-41ca-b6dd-e22bfa651ab8.jpg

At Walgreens I got a second jug of water (one is usually enough but this is the desert) and walked back in the icky heat. Cooled off and had a snack, then Ubered to Target hoping to find the new flavors of Drizzilicious, Lemon Cake and Chocolate Strawberry. Target.com showed them as In Stock, but sadly they must still be in transit because they were nowhere in the store. That's ok, I got other things like tuna pouches, protein shakes, and a cute pair of pajama pants with strawberries on them. Then it was back to the hotel for lunch and to try and relax. I am nervous for my audiologist appointment tomorrow so typically of me, I am worrying a full day ahead of time. Sigh.

Around 4:30pm I met Jael (PT) and Maya (Assist. Wardrobe) in the lobby, and we Ubered to a movie theater to see The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act. This movie is essentially the final episode of a short independently made TV series, which the three of us have watched in full. I'm so glad that we got to have a Golden Day so we could see it together!
6e2e8f1e-2fcc-442b-9611-eee0525ddc7d.jpg
(left to right Maya, Jael, and me)

My snack was a kid's tray with a Cherry Coke :)
cfbd291e-6a4c-4f0f-b0f7-64dd28a5d790.jpg

I used to work at a movie theater and remember having to assemble these little trays before the theater opened and between shows. So annoying! But for portion sizes, if you want to have it all but keep the calories low, this is the very best pick. A small popcorn without extra butter and a small soda total 600 calories. Everything in this box is about 300 calories.

ANYWAY the movie was really good...it brought closure for a lot of things, but we all agreed that a lot had been left hanging. It was surprisingly emotional too. I wonder if the creators will continue the series. They've left so many unanswered questions and the movie went above and beyond earnings expectations...so maybe? Afterward we visited a Japanese dollar store that was in the mall. Jael and Maya both got something, I was tempted but held back. I was also very hungry as it was 7pm (9pm according to my stomach lol.) We Ubered back and I made myself black rice, tofu, and avocado for dinner. As a socially awkward person who doesn't make friends easily, I was grateful to hang out with these two ladies and genuinely hope that we get to do more fun stuff together.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday:
I have an audiologist appointment in the afternoon before sound check to address the plugged/muffled feeling in my right ear. Then it's opening night here in El Paso.

Thursday: Two-show weekday, nothing planned except staying out of the heat and putting on some good shows for the people :)

Broken pottery, broken code

I collect a lot of blue and white pieces of broken pottery and thought it would be fitting to decorate a picture frame with them.

The picture frame contains a magnifying glass and instructions for looking at bugs in the Bug Hotel, part of a project I am working on for EMFCamp. The Bug Hotel contains print outs of software bugs.

This piece acknowledges the broken nature of the pottery pieces, that were once part of cups, plates, bowls, items that people used, items that people ate from or drank from, that lived in people's homes or at places they visited - pubs, hotels, restaurants, cafes, clubs and societies, work canteens. The pieces of pottery are now fragmented and separated from their original use, as well as from the original people that made them, and the people that used them. It may have been hundreds of years since they were last used in the way they were intended.

This piece tries to tie them together with software bugs - code that has broken, programs that have become fragmented. The bug reports show the code is broken like these pieces of pottery, and like the pottery, people can not use it as they would like to. The bug reports in the Bug Hotel are separated from their original programs, we cannot tell what software they are referring to, just as we cannot tell whether the sherds of pottery were once part of bowls or of cups.

FRIDAY

I was up a bit early again to finish Tempe Foodie Finds (thanks to ringsandcoffee for the additional recs!) and send out El Paso Foodie Finds to the group before heading over to the National Civil Rights Museum. The company had sponsored a group tour for us, which was amazing, especially with the timeliness of Pride Month and and Juneteenth.

The museum is the actual hotel where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated.

Anyway, I know all of that was very heavy. In closing, here is our group photo!

Disney organized this trip for us, and has organized MANY such outings that highlight inclusiveness, respect, and diversity. Inclusiveness is, after all, one of the Disney's Five Keys (their literal operations principles.) And what I love about Disney is that it's not just lip service; they ACT on that. By organizing trips like this, to educate their cast members and truly make inclusiveness an actual part of the workplace. This is (sadly) so rare. I am grateful, especially today, to work for a company that actively advocates for this.

Back at the hotel it took me a very long time to type this post (as you may imagine), and then I felt exhausted. Had a snack and rested and processed all of those feelings and thoughts. Chatted with Jameson a bit. Eventually pulled myself together to get ready for the show. Standard show, we sold really well and it was a nice audience. Afterward our Flautist (Dane) told me that during intermission some people had been looking for the bass trombonist (me) "to tell them how great they sound!" I missed them, I was probably off having my intermission snack or peeing. But how nice! Not many people appreciate bass trombone :p

SATURDAY

I got up at 6am, unnecessarily making this a long day. Breakfast and packing some things for the trunk, working on Foodie Finds for like 30 minutes and then getting an Uber to a laundromat. It was busier than I've ever seen one at 8am on a Saturday but maybe that's when Memphis people do their clothes, what do I know. Had the Uber drop me at the bagel place one last time (two plains, boooring) and walked to the hotel, put laundry away. Did my food planning and reserved a rental car for Tucson because I'm taking my tenor trombone to be serviced there. Chatted with Jameson and more Foodie Finds and researching things to do in El Paso because we have a Golden Day on Tuesday. But it's gonna be 100+ degrees out every day (37.7C+) so maybe I'll be a mall rat or see a movie, or both.

There was a pride parade today and many of our company went to see that (or even be a part of it!) I stayed in because I'm lazy and it's hot :p But the pics afterward were lovely and looked like everyone had a good time (won't share 'em without permission.) The matinee was fine though the audience was kinda quiet...some audiences are like that. Between shows the usual dinner at the hotel (deli turkey + tomato veggie sauce, half bagel, pistachios) and back for the evening show, which was equally just fine.

I keep forgetting to mention that David (clarinet) will be leaving us...Sunday is his last day. He's found another gig. I hope he has a blast! Our new clarinetist's name is Maria. She seems nice AND now we'll have FOUR women in the pit! That's nearly half the band! Woooot!

SUNDAY

I felt very tired when I woke up, despite Apple Watch saying I'd supposedly had a good sleep. The usual breakfast and semi-packing that happens on a Sunday. And the first show went well, nothing notable.

And between shows we were treated to the Orpheum's "Usher Meal!" This is a home-cooked buffet made by volunteers with the Orpheum Theatre. I remembered how good it was the last time I was here with Tootsie, and have been looking forward to it all week :)

It did not disappoint. We walked into a big dining hall to find trays and trays of delicious Southern dishes: fried chicken, pulled pork, collard greens, corn casserole, yeast rolls, cornbread, black-eyed peas, deviled eggs, sweet potato salad, potato and pasta salads, veggie salads...the list went on and on.

There was a drink station where you could have sweet or unsweet tea served in a souvenir glass, and a dessert table with banana pudding, cookies, cakes, ambrosia salad, cut fruit, and more. In preparation for this meal I had eaten fairly light earlier in the day, so I loaded UP by my standards. My plate:

We sat and chatted, signed a big poster and a scrapbook for the volunteers, and took a group photo. The leader of the Ushers gave a short speech thanking us for partaking in the meal and for putting on stellar performances here in Memphis. And encouraging us to buy the Orpheum's volunteer cookbook (I have a copy already and it's awesome!) For many of us, this is the ONLY home-cooked meal we'll have in MONTHS. It was delicious, and it also meant a lot.

Back at the hotel I took a minute to digest and attempt logging some of the foods. Took this pic before I was finished, I ended up at about 830 calories or so. I took small samples of everything, and didn't eat everything (for example the meatball was weird and the yeast roll was kinda oily) but otherwise this was as accurate as I could get it, I think. I rarely eat like this so I am not worried about going over my calories, but always log anyway for the record-keeping and for habit.

Very soon it was time for our last Memphis show. It went well and nothing to report except that Tim (trumpet) and I both felt rather tired lips-wise. One of those days I guess! Also it was David's (clarinet) last day!! He didn't want a lot of hoopla, so we just gave him a card signed by all of us and shook hands or hugged goodbye. I hope his next adventure is a good one. And from now on we'll be welcoming Maria to the Reed 2/Clarinet book! She's come over from Water for Elephants.

Emily (ensemble) did an amazing job on our wall tag here in Memphis! Here's Gaston as an Elvis impersonator!! And the Chip Kids added all the jewels on his outfit! The purple paint was still wet so we signed the white parts around the edges. Can you find my initials? ;)

Monday:
Kind of a long travel day with layovers to El Paso. Groceries and probably just chilling out.

Tuesday: A Golden Day! Jael (Physical Therapist) and Maia (Wardrobe) and I are going to see the Amazing Digital Circus finale movie, and I'll probably be a mall rat too and continue the quest for black pants.

Hugo homework continues. I'm posting about it real time on the sync read post, but also posting here as I finish things I consider stand-alone books (novellas and longer) and complete categories:

10. Rachel Hartman, Among Ghosts – I think this may be Hartman’s best book yet of the three I’ve read (I haven’t read the Tess sequel yet), or at least the most coherent – I really loved some things about Seraphina, Shadow Scale, and Tess of the Road and was less on board with others, but this one I pretty much liked as one whole thing. It kept me engrossed, and I don’t think I was overly hormonal while reading it, so I think the fact that I teared up multiple times while reading or was close is just due to the book resonating with me – the relationships, the things these characters say to each other, the layered sense of history that permeates it. It’s really well done. Spoilers from here )

Anyway, really good the Hugos made me read this book, will happily be voting for it to win Lodestar. And now I think I've read what I'm likely to read of the Lodestars, and on to the novels: I'm halfway through The Incandescent, which I'm enjoying so far.

Welcome to the RAMble City Farm or the Ethernet Meadow Fields or Ethernet Meadow Farm (EMF) or the Computer Equipment Retirement Nook (CERN)! One of those, anyway, the name has yet to be decided.

Let's take a look around the farm and meet the animals. We have mice, RAM, bees and bugs. They are all very friendly.

Today we’ll meet the mice and the bugs.

Over the last few weeks I've been listening to Les Misérables (the novel, rather than the musical), and having finished it last night I have a few observations. Firstly, it is very long, definitely the longest novel I've ever read, and arguably the longest book*, but I found it surprisingly easy going compared to other lengthy 19th century works I've tackled. It's possible that the audiobook format made a difference there, and I must admit that although I was paying pretty close attention when there was actual plot, my mind did wander a bit in some of the digressions.

Which brings me to my second observation. I now know considerably more than I ever expected to about, amongst other things, the history of the Parisian sewer system. Hugo certainly did his research, and he wanted to make sure it didn't go to waste! According to Wikipedia, more than a quarter of the novel is "devoted to essays that argue a moral point or display Hugo's encyclopedic knowledge but do not advance the plot, nor even a subplot".

My third, and perhaps least trivial observation is that Marius is an absolute cunt. In the musical he mostly comes across as a bit wet and lacking in personality, particularly compared to Valjean and Javert, whereas in the novel he is unsurprisingly a lot more fleshed out. But he is fleshed out as a ghastly, manipulative, self-centred, abusive stalker. To begin with, when he first encounters Cosette, he is in his early 20s and she is a plain gawky adolescent, and he completely fails to notice her. When he sees her again few months later she has turned fifteen and 'blossomed', he becomes obsessed, and for some time he stalks her, but without actually speaking to her. At some point during this period the wind blows her skirt up displaying her ankles to anyone who might be watching, and he spends the next fortnight in an angry jealous sulk with /a woman he has never spoken to/. Later, once they have actually met and declared their love for one another, Valjean, believing that Javert is once again on his tail, decides to leave Paris for England. When Cosette tells Marius this, and indicates that she has little choice but to go with him, he first accuses her of never having loved him, and then threatens to kill himself if she leaves. After they are married, he becomes financially controlling, not allowing Cosette to spend any of 'their' money (the vast majority of which was originally hers) on anything remotely luxurious. When he learns of Valjean's past, whilst he doesn't outright forbid him from visiting, because that might make him look like the bad guy, he makes it so unpleasant and embarrassingly clear that he is unwelcome that he eventually stops coming, and essentially dies of a broken heart.

The way he treats Éponine is if anything even worse. He is utterly disdainful and callous, but perfectly happy to take advantage of her when she is useful to him. One way this comes across is in their manner of address. When they first meet, he tutoies her, which is either done mutually within a very close and intimate relationship, by adults speaking to children, or when you want to draw attention to the fact that someone is your social inferior. She meekly accepts this, continuing to vouvoyer him, but obviously on some level kidding herself that it's an indication of intimacy rather than disdain. Some time later, after she had done him some major favours, he switches to vouvoiment. Not because he has begun to respect her or anything decent like that, but because he and Cosette are now tutoying mutually, and he feels the need to insert some clarifying distance with Éponine. She, reasonably enough, asks if she's offended him, which he ignores, and despite her feelings for him being blindingly obvious from this point, he continues to expect her to act as a gobetween and facilitator for his relationship with Cosette.

A final observation is that this interaction with Éponine is one of at least three or four in which the use of, or change between tutoiment and vouvoiment is significant in terms of plot and/or character development, and at some point I'm going to have to see how English translators handled these scenes, because it seems like it would be very difficult to preserve the social nuances without making it very clumsy.

*Other possible candidates being the Bible and the Complete Works of Shakespeare, but I don't think either of those really counts as one book.

WEDNESDAY

I did set an alarm so I could have breakfast and time to get ready, for the Peabody Duck March was at 11 and I wanted to get a good vantage point!

I have seen the ducks and the whole pomp/ceremony the last time I was in Memphis. But this time was different...because our very own COGSWORTH would be the honorary Duckmaster, leading the ducks to the central fountain!! From previous experience I knew that there would be too many people at ground level for good footage, so I went straight to the mezzanine. I also got there a solid 30 minutes early so I could scope out the best possible spot up there. I decided it was here. If I had moved a bit more to the right the flower arrangement wouldn't be in the way, but then I wouldn't have this clear shot to the elevator where the ducks come out.
3b43ba5d-f102-4c3f-a05a-a372592c7b7d.jpg

As it got closer to 11, more and more people showed up. Even up on the mezz I found myself surrounded by 10+ people, including some cast members who had come out to watch. More cast members hung out at the bar or even tried to sit on the floor by the red carpet. Before Cogsworth (actor's name is Javier) came out, the official Duckmaster himself came out to hype the crowd and give a little history of this cute and silly Memphis tradition. The TL;DR is that a manager at the hotel one day decided it would be funny to put some of his live call ducks into the hotel pond. The guests loved it so much that the ducks were kept. Turns out a bellhop at the hotel was a former Ringling animal trainer, and he offered to take charge of the ducks and teach them to travel between the fountain and a rooftop "duck palace" every day at scheduled times (11am and 5pm.) He did this so successfully that he maintained the position of Duckmaster at the hotel for 51 years!

Now there is still an official Duckmaster, but there is also an honorary Duckmaster chosen from time to time. This can be a random person from the audience, a hotel guest, or a celebrity (Oprah Winfrey, Paula Deen, and Kevin Bacon have all been Duckmasters.)

Today it was Cogsworth! As the Duckmaster finished regaling the audience with the legend of the ducks, I caught sight of Cogsworth waiting near the bar with some handlers:
f018c453-4c8b-43ec-bba2-275af23e4c7c.jpg

First, some children were chosen to be the official Red Carpet Rollers for the occasion. Next, Cogsworth made his entrance and a short ceremony was conducted to make him an official honorary Duckmaster. Then the Duckmaster and Cogsworth walked the red carpet to the elevator to go fetch the ducks. Finally, to the triumphal sound of a Sousa march, the five ducks appeared and walked the red carpet, Cogsworth herding them with high-steps and his official Duckmaster cane and his bright red megaphone. One by one the ducks plopped into the fountain, to everyone's delight. The whole thing was absolutely adorable (and of course, great PR.)

Here is my footage from the mezzanine (less than 5 minutes long):

There was an entire camera crew set up near the elevator and practically IN the fountain, so there'll be official footage too at some point. Once the ceremony was over people crowded the fountain to exclaim over the ducks (which are ordinary Mallards) then dispersed gradually to go about their day or buy duck-themed merch at the hotel's gift shop.

The hotel itself is gorgeous and almost a museum, with historical exhibits and memento displays all over the place, but I had Adulting Things to do today so skipped all that and made myself scarce. It was fun and adorable to see Cogsworth herding ducks today!!

The rest of my day was BORING compared to that. I typed up this post, worked on Tempe Foodie Finds (which I have to make a bit longer since we're there for two weeks), ate lunch, called Southwest to find out how one changes seats on flights now, and grudgingly practiced my Main Street Philharmonic music with a mute at the hotel. It got easier as I went along. I am always blown away to find that if I try to actively remember my music and think about it while playing, it is a struggle...but if I let my mind go blank and allow muscle memory to take over, everything just comes right back. The practice session made me feel a lot better about being ready for performing this summer.

And I took more pics of my IEM faceplates for a thank-you post for Ultimate Ears on the socials...
bd1ef3f8-1ad4-4ca9-b932-5119d6c9b089.jpg

...and made a more clear video showing how to swap out the faceplates:

Walked back to the theater around 3pm to return my iPad, trombone, and in-ears. I could have waited until showtime but I like knowing that everything is ready to go beforehand, when possible. Dinner and the show, we had a really wonderful audience who got into it!

An unusual thing happened during the scene where Gaston proposes to Belle: after she turns him down, LeFou has a dramatic little breakdown and says, "What should I do with the ring now? Can I keep it?" Gaston shouts, "Give me that!" and snatches the ring from LeFou...only this time when he went to snatch it he must have accidentally knocked it out of LeFou's hand. I heard the sound of metal hitting the floor, then heard the ring rolling across the stage. I heard it hit the black drop cloth that partially covers the pit net, then heard it "ping" off of something (a road case?) somewhere behind me....then silence.

From listening to the sounds the ring had made as it fell, I concluded that it had not fallen through the cracks leading to UNDER the pit. If it had, we would have heard one final "CLANG" as it hit either metal or concrete down there. It must still be somewhere behind me at pit level. Possibly on something soft, as I hadn't heard it hit anything after bouncing off the road case. During intermission I turned my phone light on and went hunting for it. Climbed over several stacked road cases, looking between them, and did not see it...but when I climbed to the lip of the pit level and peered down into a gap between the drum booth and an audio cable box (red arrow)...
22d2e4cc-cc48-4d3b-b6c9-253ae7d4a5f8.jpg

...something gold and round flashed back at me. The ring, resting on a clump of thick cables way down there.
(Artistic rendering of where the ring had been lol)
83e9b737-fe58-413b-b80b-6e5c5f063e62.jpg

I squeezed into the crack and climbed down, got it, and brought it back to Props. But not before getting a picture!
e23387a6-e3f4-4a68-a1d9-6919175291fb.jpg

Over the years I've gotten beaned by and/or found many props that have fallen into the pit, or have come my way. Examples include a fake bee from a clown's costume; a tuppence from a scene in My Fair Lady; an Etch-a-Sketch from a dance number in Elf; and many more. I love to see the props up close...and I also admittedly enjoy recovering them, returning them, and being praised for it :D Replacing lost props can be a lot of extra work for crew, so if we can find what was lost it saves them time and work :)

THURSDAY

Did not set an alarm but was up at 7:30 anyway due to time zone changes. Breakfast and I started to work on Foodie Finds but instead decided to go for a walk before it got any hotter out. Went to a small local grocery for protein and back to Hive for two more bagels (rosemary sea salt, blueberry.) Round trip it was two miles. THEN I worked on Foodie Finds, ate lunch, and practiced my Main Street Phil music again. I have the Flag Ceremony Music and Parade Music definitely memorized, and additionally reviewed five Castle Set pieces (the easier ones first.) This is going well and I have high hopes that I won't have to spend time EVERY day for the next month practicing. I also need to start reviewing the Epic Universe stuff.

Before tonight's show we had a full company photo on stage to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Beauty and the Beast National Tour. It is hard to believe it's been one full year already. My PERSONAL one-year mark is A) not until June 17th or so because that's when band rehearsals started, and B) because I was entered into the employment system incorrectly, my on-paper one-year mark isn't until September!! It happened because they were trying to let me keep my amusement park PERNR, which I very much appreciate, so I'm not upset :)

The evening show went well. Afterward there was a talkback so we made ourselves scarce quickly.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday:
The company has arranged a tour of the Civil Rights Museum here in Memphis, and I am going! No other plans for the day. One evening show.

Saturday: Laundry early in the morning + two shows.

Sunday: Two shows, and between shows we have the Orpheum's traditional Usher Meal which I'm very much looking forward to. Packing for El Paso.
