As is always the way with gigs, the more you play, the more you get given. As of half eight last night we're on a the Montague Arms in New Cross tonight. I have no idea who we're playing *with* but it's a halfway decent promoter and it's a Friday night, they're not going to be awful at least.

I'd just like to say that last night we were really good. That's not to say we didn't make mistakes, we did that all right, but they didn't stop us, they didn't interrupt the feel of it. I think the clearest case of that was when Jodie started Hey! Thinker, one she starts on her own, in the wrong key. Me and Debz came in but then Debz stopped because it was too low and she'd have had to jig everything weirdly up an octave to fit it in, Jodie noticed and sort of changed key at the end of a loop but to one too high instead; I stopped as well, Jodie did some more hunting around, eventually got it right and we all started again. Instead of this being a hissing acrimonious thing we were all grinning at each other, Jodie kept the nice off-beat loop constantly turning over while hunting the key so the beat didn't get dropped; we looked like we knew what we were doing, dammit, even when making mistakes. That, to me, is how it ought to be.

And there was the Moon, who have a new drummer I'm not quite sure about but who at least is tall enough to require minimal kit jigging; Joe makes up for almost any band deficiencies by being Joe. I hope he didn't get too much glass in his arse when floudering down into the gap between the tables.

Public Enterprise! Public Enterprise! Santa in the form of Neil the guitarist brought me their 3-track demo. Mark claims he was burning me a disc of all their tracks when his CD burner broke. Bah. Anyway what with it being a party-like atmosphere and with the Moon's teenage fans all jumping away already, I danced like a loon for the whole set. Umm, and there was the bit where Mark thanked Punch Judy and foolishly added 'though I hope they don't punch me' and if that isn't a feedline for the band member of comedy-opportunity dimensions you've been feeding beer to and who's already stood just in front of the stage to dive in simulated attack, I don't know what is. And then we were packing up there was this sort of odd bit where about four of us took up sticks and various separated parts of Pablo's kit and started grooving round playing along to things like a very low-quality samba band. Fun and foolishness; Lawrence of Brockley asked me if this actually was Public Enterprise and said they'd got a lot better since last time he saw them and frankly, no they haven't, it was just that usual barrier coming down, where you start from the principle of having a fun evening and discover that this band are part of it, instead of standing still and waiting for some sort of epiphany to arrive on unlistening ears. Ee, that was fun all round.
