Didn't need that. I've just been to attempt to go for a swim. I showed my membership card, got the ticket, went and got changed, went to the pool. The lifeguard explained, very nicely, that it was men-only tonight after 9pm and that he couldn't let me swim, promised to have a word with the desk people and get me a refund. I said it didn't matter, it hadn't cost me anything, and went and got back changed again. I thought I'd better point it out to the girl on the desk on the way out, though, civil like, make sure she was aware it was men-only. I explained, but before I'd got halfway through she went "Oh, it's not because of you, I didn't know it was that tonight!" in a way that made it *obvious* that it was an automatic and blatant lie. That was about the point where I recognised her as the same girl who, a couple of months ago when I was arriving for a swim, urgently reminded the girl who was actually serving me that "it's women-only night tonight!" and then made some feeble lie to try and cover that up when she twigged.

I'm not certain whether it was gender confusion, or a not-*my*-fault lie, or just her having no clue how to do her job, and it doesn't matter even matter. Either way she's either a lair, an air-head or both. It's everything I hate about teenage girls, and for someone in a customer service job it's just bloody stupid. Sometimes I'm very glad not to be counted amongst the girls.

I think I'll go find somewhere useful to cycle to.

I like these stories. This happens to my ex-housemate a lot and also to an old friend who looked completely male, actually, but sometimes wore make-up. He got called 'madam' in shops really often. People are STUPID!

Seconded! Stupid people need other people to have elaborate props and costumes in order to distinguish gender (I'm talking He-Man or Pamela Anderson levels here:-) When I had a shaved head I got called "sir" a couple of times (by male shop assistants), but, bless 'em, they did backpedal like mad:-D
