When we left the house to go diving last night, about 5 pm, Isner (a six foot nine American with actually enough control of his size to play well too as well as just smash the aces) and Mahut (a wiry Frenchman who's actually six three but doesn't look it playing Isner) had got to twenty four games each in the final set of their first round match at Wimbledon, and were three hours into their second day of play. Isner regularly churns out serves at near-record speeds, but Mahut keeps jumping the right way, and there had been good tennis going on as well as the huge serves.
The diving itself then went a little sketchily - I was doing Dive Leader drills involving AS ascents and controlled buoyant lifts from 15 metres, and there were a couple of fast ascents, and we're going to have to do it again, but that's why we got ourselves a 40% nitrox mix to do it with - but eventually we made it to the pub and got food down us and that was that.
This morning when I woke up it occurred to me to wonder how that tennis match had gone. The answer is, after seven hours' play yesterday, they ran out of light at FIFTY NINE games each, and are going to start again today. Apparently Isner looked dead on his feet by the end of yesterday. It might come down to who can stand up the longest, which doesn't favour the bigger man. It's kind of scary.
