Das Double Muslim Music & Kill Yourself, the Hob, the week after.
The two I saw of a three band bill from Leeds, travelling around for the Bank Holiday weekend. Leeds is a big place, and has room for its very own scene of Melvins-tastic lunatic absurdist noise. Das Double Muslim Music are two blokes with their heads wrapped up in t-shirts - one of which later turns out to read 'What would Devo do?' - with a drum kit, a bass, a megaphone and a free and easy way with the concept of the song. The drum kit includes a snare made by adding wires to a small floor tom. Because, right, it sounds good, and if it sounds good, why not? Kill Yourself are a bit more coherent but the drums in much the same style, abstract bashing around the beat, lots of stuff on the floor tom, angular propulsion. A very loud hardcore bass and a tinny jangly guitar are added by a couple of blokes in a respirator and a gas mask. With a microphone taped to the outside of the gas mask. Because, right, it sounds good, and if it sounds good.. I can get right behind this kind of thing, it's silly but at least it's usually got some intent and some dynamic urge behind it.
