We're on our way to a beer festival in Belgium. By train, and without passports or border controls or needing different money or anything, because you can do that round here. We had to select a different bit of the ticket machine menu to get destinations in other countries, which was very nearly momentarily confusing. Also the Kitkat Chunky I just ate was a hazelnut one, and tasted confusingly like something made by Kinder. The tiny local train that goes from Roosendaal to Essen once an hour is full of Americans eating kebabs from the station shop and going to the same festival, by the sounds of it. I think this is probably going to be a fun evening.

its one of the reason that the EU is pushing hard for harmonisation of cost across borders, what would be really good is if the prices were the same no matter where you were in europe i could use a spanish or italian phone contract in the uk, a proper free market

Sounds like a pain, yes. I believe that if you are on the border of your "home" network, if your phone can see networks from multiple countries, it will choose your "home" network by preference, even if the signal is weaker. So you should usually be safe from unexpected costs unless you hit a signal dead spot. Near the cliffs on Anglesey there are spots where there is no signal from UK networks, but you can get an Irish signal, so you've got to be careful there!
