Punch Judy tried out a new guitarist last week. He proved to be unideal. Whilst I'd happily go down the pub and drink with the evening away with him, top bloke and all, having a fairly blokey sort of bloke in has helped clarify what we're after.
Several women have been in touch, but so far every one has got in touch and then come up with some reason why they can't possibly. One reckons it's too far to travel from North London, (to Acton, this is), another was interested and then decided that after seven years of learning the guitar she still doesn't have the confidence and doesn't want to join a band after all. One was being unhappy with her band and looking for another but has decided to stay with the original after all, which helps in terms of believing that useful female lead guitarists exist, at least. Ideally we're looking for a woman, but we keep running into the biggest problem with female musicians; the way so many of them have been suckered by the idea that all this is somehow harder for women. So we need the sort of woman who has worked out getting over herself and getting on with it, please.
Ideally female but not necessarily. The blokey bloke thing doesn't work. I'm sure it was just an unconscious verbal (he was Aussie) tic but it didn't seem right to be being called 'darlin' at the end of every sentence. But though not that, we reckon we could cope with some eye-liner wearing fey skinny indie boy. The sort that becomes mysteriously confident behind a guitar whilst looking like he'd rather be at home with a cup of herbal tea the rest of the time. Yeah, that'd work.
We also reckon that all these ads are only getting the sort of people who go round looking for ads and thus, word of mouth has to be a good way to go. So please, if you know any female lead guitarists, in the London vicinity, or have a suitable indie-boy stashed somewhere that you could lend out, please let me know.
