What to do this evening
Nov. 25th, 2006 10:48 amAny of you uncertain what to do this evening? Well, I have *the only* sensible solution. You'll come and see Toupé at the Bull & Gate. They're made of one drummer of the sort that hits things hard enough to bounce out of his seat, one bassist who uses more effects than I've ever seen a bassist use, though some of them are on his voice, and one massively egotistical six-string bassist who, shockingly, can do all the tedious slap-bass shite but actually make music with it. They are energetic and silly and excellent to dance to and an all round Good Thing. Go on, you will you will you will.

verlaine do standup last night. If the whole amount of material had been condensed and redistributed between about five or six people, the event as a whole would have been excellent. As it was there was one genuine stage natural, another two or three who were pretty good at least partly because of the disjoint of being on a stage, another two or three who had their moments, and about four real clunkers. Makes for an interesting change, though.
verlaine was mainly surreal, I expect, to those who don't know him and aren't perfectly used to having to think about whether they've got a pair of popes down the front of their jumper.
Also, I'm really going to have to dig out some pictures of my sister.
vardebedian thought it was amusing to have me stand back to back with
absinthecity but the thing is, and this has been secretly gently messing with my head for ages, she actually looks like my big sister, or a better-looking version of her, anyway. People genuinely used to say they could see the resemblance, and then I'd tell them I was adopted and they'd look faintly relieved. I imagine conjuring up resemblances was quite an effort.

I'm going along - it's a 'burlesque art school' for one day in December.

Date: 2006-11-25 02:17 pm (UTC)Your comments on last night's entertainment are very accurate, btw. I'd have picked about six decent ones too and sent the rest packing ;) (in one case, I think we pretty much did that with heckling...)
and that's the last bloody time I sit at the front.
