Drumming always cheers me up and makes me properly awake. I pay for it in the morning, especially tomorrow morning when I ought to be in work before 9 if possible, but for now I am a chuffing genius.

I can model the ellipse a chunk at a time, and get lift for each bit and sum them. That won't give me an accurate answer but if I compare it to wind tunnel tests for the same shape, I've then got a range of figures that it'll be reasonable to make estimates against. Ha ha.

And, and, I don't have to get registered *and* get a load of articles from the BL on Friday, because I also don't have to work Monday and can come back through then and get some more. And maybe even actually meet Andy Ford.

This whole airship malarkey might fly yet.

Yay! Zeppelins! :) How big is it/will it be?

Big enough to support a human pilot, ie me, and itself, so probably all-in lifting capacity of 150kg or so. Currently looking to be more of a flying saucer shape than a traditional Zeppelin shape so, a disc of about 10m diameter and about 3.3m depth gives you the relevant volume of helium. I'm just having trouble finding any software that can model how the air flows around such a shape. I'm building wind tunnel models for it out of foam but if I can relate those results to some calculations, then I can calculate other shapes and take a running guess at their validity too. It may yet turn out that doing the calculations is harder work than building flying saucers out of foam, mind.

Eek. I was expecting a <10kg model. What brought about this desire to build such a feat of amateur avionic engineering?

My third year project, and this bloke that came in and gave us a lecture and wanted someone to take it up as a project. I seem to have been the only person in my year daft enough to try it.

These things do already exist, though there's not many and they don't work terribly well. My aim is to build a better one. But some spoony videos anyway, see http://www.endlessflyers.com and see if your French still works.

Hello, I believe you know Andy Ford? I'm the student who has been designing a human powered airship for him this year. I don't know when we'll have it built and ready to compete but we are working on it!
